Between Seasons
Creating in the Quiet Shift from Autumn to Winter
The last week of October (already?!) always feels like a gentle pause~ that moment when the air changes into a cold and crisp, the light softens, and everything begins to settle. The gardens are fading into rest, the skies are cooler, and there’s a hush that feels both melancholy and grounding. For me, that in-between space~ not quite autumn, not yet winter~ has always been one of the most creative times.
It’s a time for smaller pieces, slower work, and quiet experimentation. This month, that’s taken the form of artist cards and bookmarks, watercolor studies, and a few digital pieces that are still being stubborn about their backgrounds (they’ll come around eventually~ they always do).
🍁 The Rhythm of Change
Autumn has always carried a certain energy for me~ rich colors, softer light, and that reminder that everything beautiful changes form. The reds and ochres outside often end up seeping into my palette without me realizing it. My watercolor paintings this season have leaned into warmth fading into cool hues~ that delicate moment when gold turns to lavender, or when fog swallows the last sunlight.
💧 Digital Frustrations, Natural Lessons
My digital pieces, though… have been testing my patience. Sometimes, no matter how much erasing, reworking, or texturing I do, the background refuses to feel right. But maybe that’s part of the lesson this season keeps teaching~ to let things rest, to trust that not every piece resolves immediately.
Just like the garden, art has its dormant moments before it blooms again.
❄️ Winter’s Approach
As winter approaches, I find myself craving stillness in my work~ simple strokes, muted tones or deeply rich tones, and quiet stories. I’ll be creating limited artist cards and bookmarks inspired by the shift of seasons, along with a few final watercolor paintings, before the studio slows down for the new year.
This season’s art feels like a whisper~ small, thoughtful, and reflective. The world outside may be slowing down, but inside the studio, the ideas are quietly taking root for what’s to come.
Art, like the seasons, never truly ends~ it only changes form.
