🎨 Commission Etiquette: A Guide for Artists and Clients

Commissioning artwork is one of the most rewarding ways to support an artist while receiving something deeply personal and unique. At Art Collective International (ACI), we’re home to multiple studios working across a wide range of mediums ~ from watercolor and digital illustration to stained glass, jewelry, and miniatures. With so many approaches under one roof, clarity and communication are absolutely key to making commissions successful.

Here are some etiquette tips that help create a smooth, respectful, and enjoyable experience for both clients and artists:

For Clients

  • Bring a Vision (Even if It’s Broad): You don’t need a fully fleshed-out idea, but having a generalized feel for what you’re looking for is incredibly helpful. Whether it’s a mood, color palette, or subject matter, it gives us artists a foundation to build on.

  • Understand Medium Differences: Not all art is created the same way ~ stained glass, for example, requires different planning and limitations than a watercolor painting or a hand-sculpted miniature. Keep in mind that the medium you choose will affect timelines, possibilities, and outcomes.

  • Be Clear and Specific Where You Can: Share details like subject, style, size, and references when possible. The more we know, the closer we can get to your vision.

  • Respect the Process: Creativity takes time, and every medium has its own rhythm. Trust the timeline provided and avoid rushing unless agreed upon ahead of time.

  • Communicate Kindly: Feedback is welcome, but constructive and respectful comments keep the collaboration positive and productive.

  • Understand Pricing: You’re investing in the artist’s time, skill, and years of practice. If something’s outside your budget, it’s okay to wait or plan for the right time.

  • Credit the Artist: Share your commission proudly ~ just don’t forget to tag or credit the artist when you post online!

For Artists

  • Set Clear Boundaries: Outline your process, pricing, payment terms, and revision limits from the start. Transparency prevents misunderstandings.

  • Communicate Regularly: Keep clients updated with progress shots if that’s part of your process, and be upfront if delays arise.

  • Respect the Client’s Vision: Clients come to you for your style, but making sure their requests feel heard builds trust.

  • Know When to Say No: Not every commission is the right fit ~ and that’s okay. Protect your time and energy for the projects that align best.

At the heart of commission etiquette is mutual respect. A commission is a collaboration, and when both sides treat each other with clarity, patience, and kindness, it leads to artwork that everyone can feel proud of ~ and lasting connections between artist and client.
