Attending Makers Markets: Lessons Learned & Tips for Success 🎨🛍️ Blog No. 2
I’ve really been enjoying attending makers markets lately! Fresh faces, returning customers, and people finding joy in art—it’s all so rewarding. Sure, it can be exhausting at the end of the day, but I always leave with a sense of accomplishment. I get to spend time with my amazing business partners and create new works of art along the way. ✨
Our first few events were definitely a bit rusty. Our first table setup was chaotic—overloaded with products, confusing signage, and a layout that caused “shopping paralysis” for customers. Womp womp womp 😅. But we learned fast!
In this blog, I’ll share everything I’ve learned so far—from customer interactions to essential items that make your art and handmade business more successful and comfortable.

Essential Items Checklist for Makers Markets ✅
-
Fold-out tables 🏷️: Avoid rental fees! Most markets require a 6’ table. Depending on your space, 1–2 tables usually work. You can find them at wholesale stores like Costco or online.
-
Weatherproof tent ⛺: Protect yourself and your products from the elements. Owning a tent saves money on rentals and adds flexibility for indoor or outdoor shows.
- Sandbags: This will keep your tent grounded and stable if any wind arises. It is also a huge safety precaution for everyone around you!
- Tablecloths 🖤: Choose clean, neutral colors (we use black) for a professional look and to hide worn tables. It makes your products pop!
-
Comfortable chairs 💺: Markets can last several hours, sometimes over multiple days. You’ll need a place to sit and rest.
-
Bins for organization 📦: Label your boxes (e.g., “Product,” “Packaging”) to make setup smooth and efficient.
-
Business cards 💌: Customers will want a way to contact you. Start simple and improve as you go.
-
Packaging 🎁: Bags, boxes, ribbons, or stickers make your products feel refined. Eco-friendly options add value and appeal.
-
Foldable cart with wheels 🛒: Avoid back strain—especially with heavy product loads.
-
Signage 🪧: Clear labels are vital. Laminated, erasable signs save money and allow for price changes.
-
Till box 💰: Keep cash secure and organized. A lockable metal box works best.
-
Cash 💵: Keep a mix of $1s, $5s, $10s, and coins for customer convenience.
-
Custom kit ✂️: Pens, scissors, tape, alcohol wipes, jewelry pliers, stickers, etc., make setup and troubleshooting easier.
-
Displays 🖼️: Draw people in with curated displays. Whether wood, acrylic, or stone, make it visually appealing.
-
Banner 🎌: Highlight your brand name, website, or social media.
-
Reliable POS system 📱: Mobile card readers simplify transactions. Research fees and options for the best fit.
-
Notebook 📒: Keep track of sales as backup and for inventory purposes.
-
Shopping baskets (optional) 🧺: Especially helpful if selling small items like jewelry or keychains.
- Mirror (optional) 💅: Allows people to try on clothing and accessories, and get the feel for the product.
